War is fascinating.
All men understand this.
And in reality , no other context of human events produces such extremes of evil and all that can be called good in humanity.
From the subliminal power of the black SS regalia to the brute power of a do or die engagement with dual warhammers [example the german in the first combat scene of Kingdom of heaven]
The Mother who throws herself over the younglings as the bombs land. The crazyass fool who runs out to save a mate and dies carrying him back.
If all of this were fiction it could be fobbed off as such.. But it is not fiction. These things actually happen.
Humanity shows itself true in extremes. War is the most extreme thing i can think of. The horror of it makes you pray to a god you may not even believe exists that it wont happen here.
Men of Harlech is a reference to The engagement at rorks drift
on the 22 and 23 jan 1879.139 men held of a zulu impi of some 4 to 5000 warriors. 11 victoria crosses were handed out to the survivors. The highest proportion to men in any engagement in history. Think what the media would say now if US troops held off an equivalent attack and 11 congressional medals were handed out to a single company.?
The movie of course is off line in many aspects but that final battle still sends a shiver down the spine.. We truely see how england made an empire on which the sun never set.
Warships artillery and from this engagement.. the rotating fire drill.
We have found the enemy and it is us.
